The base-boat price (£95,000) is extremely low for a 38-footer, she looks great, cuts quite a modern dash on the water, and you’ll warm to her the moment you step below for the first time. Off the wind the same sail helped us keep 4.5 knots+ on the log, despite the now fading breeze. The cockpit is comfortable enough for the crew, with decent coamings and good bracing against the table, but one of the crew will have to be tasked with mainsheet duties.She responds well to the wheel, manoeuvring in a spritely way. With two cabins, the extra space aft of the head to starboard is used as a stand-up shower. Clearly, the Océanis 38 is not designed for challenging offshore work. The Beneteau Oceanis 38 can support three cabins, but the two-cabin layout has its own advantages. Her side decks are asymmetrical, giving her designers more leeway in creating the layout. I would expect half a knot more upwind but otherwise she doesn’t let herself down, and the furling gennaker makes a big difference to performance, particularly in lighter winds. The Beneteau 37 has more area in the foretriangle than in the mainsail, although it still sports an easy-to-tame 105-percent genoa. That brilliant first impression doesn’t last forever, though. Despite a relatively low ballast ratio she felt reasonably stiff and directionally very stable.
